Colleges deal with furniture, clothes and more left by students

By Associated Press
(AP) – It’s going to take more than vacuum cleaners and disinfectant to clean up after the class of 2017. Try a moving van, or maybe an 18-wheeler.
Despite having just 17-hundred students, Davidson College has stacks of clothing, furniture, lamps and electronics.

The material has been turned over to local charities, and Davidson isn’t alone.
Next Saturday, Penn State will offer up to 62 tons of student debris at the annual “Trash to Treasure” sale. Boston College collects up to 100-thousand items annually for dozens of community groups. In the 15 years since its program started, the University of Michigan has channeled 123 tons of “gently used” student gear back to the community.
People may not want some of the things left behind. A six-foot boa constrictor got left in a drawer at the University of Florida, while this year’s haul at Colgate includes a gross of chopsticks, a walking cast and a disco ball.
