Haverty Furniture Same-Store Sales Fall

Haverty Furniture Posts 4.4 Percent Drop in January Same-Store Sales

ATLANTA (AP) — Home furnishings retailer Haverty Furniture Cos. said Thursday its sales at stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, fell 4.4 percent in January.
Total sales for the month slipped 3 percent to $64.9 million from $66.9 million in January 2016.
“Our January started very slowly with weak business for the New Year’s holiday in many of the markets we serve,” said Clarence H. Smith, president and chief executive officer. “We experienced a gradual increase in momentum throughout January with total written sales off by about 6 percent for the full month.
The company said the general trend for retail home furnishings sales remains sluggish due to the continued housing market slowdown.
“We have continued to maintain our pricing integrity and are focusing on adjusting our operating costs to meet the current business conditions,” Smith added.
Havertys operates 120 showrooms in 17 states in the Southern and Midwestern regions.
