Recycled furniture goes modern

Our desire to reuse merges with our desire for trendy home décor

As the saying goes, everything old is new again, and that applies to modern furniture.

The appeal of modern design’s spare lines and forms has combined with consumers’ desire to reduce, reuse and recycle, resulting in high-end, streamlined furniture and accessories for the home.

These recycled pieces are high on performance, although they may cost a little more than ready-made items. But it is the design that make these pieces “must-haves.” “As long as the design is modern and attractive, it will sell,” said Jill Warner of Mod Livin’ in Denver.

Urban Woods in Los Angeles primarily uses lumber from old, demolished buildings to create furnishings because not only is it sustainable but the quality is there.

“We use this old-growth and denser, harder, more beautiful Douglas fir,” Trevor Webb said. “It’s naturally resistant to bugs and rotting.”

Warner recommends looking for furniture made from recycled materials based on quality, texture and design.

“A ‘recycled’ piece is one that’s simply reused, because it doesn’t require additional energy and resources to create,” she said.

“So, truly recycled products are vintage things you fix up and clean up.
