Live a fairy tale dream with fabulous furniture
by Karen Overbury
THE world seems to have gone a little mad of late, as I’ve noticed a rather usual trend which is creeping its way on to the decorating scene.
The trend I’m referring to is the fairy tale look. Yes, that’s right people want their homes to remind them of a dream world. Now, I love Cinderella as much as the next person, but I must admit that this idea seemed a little off the wall even for me
However, after giving it some thought I realised that this look is just a mixture of all the key trends and my favourite looks of the summer put together in a fabulous over the top way.
The keys trends of the summer were sumptuous baroque designs and bright colours but with the fairy tale look you can throw in metallics, jewels, dreamy wallpaper and in fact anything else that takes your fancy.
This look is definitely not for the minimalist as rooms need to be crammed full of magic objects and designs!
For a fairy tale bedroom it’s good to start with a blank canvas. If time allows then think about adding in some coving around the top of the room, www.ukhomeinteriors.co.uk has a really wide choice.
Secondly opt for some luxurious wallpaper. I’m absolutely in love with the Bergmasque Florimund wallpaper by Designers Guild (www.wallpaperdirect.co.uk) which is pricey but worth every penny. The gorgeous pink design is definitely worthy of a fairy tale.
For the flooring, I’d opt for a thick cream carpet to add to the luxury feel.
Now to fill the room with opulent goodies! Barker and Stonehouse ranges include The Amour, Celine or Quillan furniture which would all look amazing depending on what type of overall look you’re going for.
When accessorising you can be as over the top as you dare. Visit www.bombayduck.co.uk for a gorgeous choice of chandeliers to add a definite touch of glamour to the room. While your there have a look round – the website has lots of beautiful gems and treasures to decorate with.
Also a fairy tale room wouldn’t be complete without a few luxuries. Make sure you throw in lots of cushions, a sumptuous chair and some interesting accessories.
Hang crystals and glass beads from fishing wire in the window which will reflect the sunlight during the day and create little rainbows within the room.
The Baroque candelabra was designed for a room just like this and the ceramic artichokes will finish off the room perfectly, both from Barker and Stonehouse.
So now I hope I’ve convinced you that the fairy tale look can be practical and gorgeous and isn’t all make believe!
