Waco's Smith Furniture set to close after more than 60 years

Smith Furniture, which has been making and selling furniture in

Waco since 1939, will close this week because of a sagging market for its products and owner Harry Smith’s poor health. The company’s 50 employees have been told of the decision.
Harry Smith is undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at Providence Health Center. He said during a phone interview Tuesday that his prognosis is good.
Smith Furniture was one of the last, if not the last, furniture manufacturing plants in Texas. Harry Smith sold imported furniture as well as furniture made at the plant. His son, Mark Smith, said sales had not met expectations in recent months.
The company is located at 5900 Franklin Ave.
