Mount Vernon Furniture Factory Burns For Over 12 Hours
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. — A five-alarm fire blazed at a furniture upholstery factory for
more than 12 hours, forcing the residents of a nearby apartment building to temporarily evacuate and causing minor injuries to two firefighters before it was put under control.
Firefighters arrived at Munrod Interior Upholstery in Mount Vernon at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. They worked through the night in frigid, icy conditions, facing a blaze that was fed by the combustible material inside the block-long structure. Two firefighters were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Residents of the four-story apartment building were evacuated because of fears the fire would spread but were later allowed to return after firefighters contained it.
The fire was put under control just before 10 a.m. Thursday, with firefighters still on the scene to deal with the last remnants of flame.
