Classic Hollywood set designs inspire collection of furniture

Celebrity designer Angelo Surmelis recently unveiled his debut furniture collection, and it has classic Hollywood all over it.

These Silver Screen legends are just a few of the different models of The Modern Classics by angelo: Home collection of chairs, loveseats and sofas, whose clean, modern lines and fresh palette of colors and patterns have been selling out at Overstock.com since it launched in early August.

The Korea International Furniture and Interior Fair 2009

Until Monday: The Korea Federation of Furniture Industry Cooperatives is currently organizing the Korea International Furniture & Interior Fair for importers and exporters, wholesalers and retailers as well as purchasing managers. The KFFIC was founded in 1962 with the purpose of promoting the development of the local furniture industry. The fair features some 1,100 booths introducing information on household and office furniture; ornaments and interior articles; furniture hardware and fabric; woodworking machinery including blades, knives, trimmers and molding machines; and other related industry goods such as raw materials and accessories.

Antique dealers struggling in weak economy

Nobody’s beating the door down to get into this place,” is how John Willis, an employee at A-Art’s Antiques & Appraisers on Sutter Street in Folsom, describes business during a recession.

He said a key signal of a bottoming of the economy’s decline is consumer spending and it’s very apparent right now.

U.K. July Retail Sales Increase for Second Month on Furniture

Furniture Brands International Opens 2 Outlets in D.C. Area

Furniture Brands International, one of the largest U.S. furniture manufacturers and owner of such brands as Thomasville, Henredon, Drexel Heritage and Hickory Chair, recently opened outlet stores in Rockville and Vienna. The outlets are the company’s only two in the country, says John Hastings, vice president of communications.

From individual furniture makers to national retailers, green furnishing options are popping up in many stores and price ranges to appeal to eco-friendly consumers and conform to stricter environmental laws.

The Sustainable Furnishings Council, a nonprofit that promotes green practices in the furniture industry, has grown to over 300 members since it was created three years ago. And green trends were highlighted at the two largest furniture shows in High Point, N.C., and Las Vegas this year.
