Company has new distribution center in Mississippi

TUPELO, Miss. — Case goods and upholstery importer World Imports will show at next month’s Tupelo Furniture Market, leasing a 16,900-square-foot showroom in space 6224 of Building 6.

World Imports sells bedroom, dining room, occasional and accent furniture and upholstery. It operates out of a 600,000-square-foot Northeast distribution center in Philadelphia and recently opened a Southern distribution center in Bruce, Miss., which is just southwest of Tupelo.

Keep furniture from tipping

Each year about 15,000 kids are brought to the emergency room with injuries caused by furniture tip-overs, according to data collected by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That’s a 41 percent increase since the early 1990s, with falling TVs, shelves and dressers being the most common accidents. The increase may be due to changes in furniture design. Here’s what you can do to help prevent injuries from occurring:

Biggest-Ever Bauhaus Exhibition in Berlin

BERLIN — It wasn’t a happy ending. Once celebrated as Europe’s leading art and design school, by early 1933 the Bauhaus was reduced to camping in a hastily converted telephone factory on the outskirts of Berlin and subsisting on handouts from its director, the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Denouncing it as “un-German,” the newly elected Nazi government forced the school to close.

Legends, Nebraska Furniture Mart make tax payments to Wyandotte County

The Legends Shopping Center and Nebraska Furniture Mart have agreed to pay more than $6.6 million combined in delinquent property taxes to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan.

The Legends agreed to pay $3.856 million in delinquent taxes from 2008, bringing it up to date for property taxes owed, the Unified Government said in a release late Thursday. The Legends will make the payment by wire transfer on Friday, the release said.

Haverty Furniture Q2 Comps Plunge 22.6% – Update

(RTTNews) – Home furnishings retailer Haverty Furniture Companies Inc. (HVT: News ) reported Thursday a sharp decline in second quarter comparable store sales, with sales plunging 23%.

For the second quarter, Haverty Furniture’s comparable store sales decreased 22.6% from last year that exclude locations opened, closed or otherwise non-comparable during the last 12 months. Sales for the quarter plunged 23% to $129.7 million from $168.4 million in the same period last year.
