Floors Made From Recycled Leather Belts

Friday, January 30th, 2009

This is one of the coolest re-purposing projects I’ve seen in a good long while – belts as floors! This just goes to show you that with a little creativity, you can re-purpose just about anything.

The floors made by TING with recycled leather belts are part of their HOME line. The HOME line stats follow:

“Brightly coloured seat belts are woven into floor and scatter cushions, oversized cubes and hammocks. Deceptively simple in design and incredibly durable, these distinctive accessories have become a modern classic, adding sleek sophisticated glamour to stylish interiors, including bars, restaurants, boutique hotels and film and fashion shoots. Inghua is currently expanding this range and the new, extended HOME collection will be launched at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York this Spring 2008.“

Very nice. TING also makes items like luggage, belts, wallets using salvaged materials.

One-of-a-Kind Furniture From a Swedish Village

Friday, January 30th, 2009

By ELAINE LOUIE

Priscilla, a 1950s rosewood chair covered in linen with a mohair velvet pattern, is one of the latest pieces created by Adam & Viktoria, a Swedish textile and furniture design firm run by Adam Gistedt and Viktoria Nygren. Mr. Gistedt, 38, and Ms. Nygren, 37 — who also live together and have children together — upholster one-of-a-kind, vintage chairs in textiles of their own design. The fabric is made in Portugal, and the furniture is upholstered by the designers in their studio in Drottningholm, a village near Stockholm.

Priscilla, above, is $3,900; the fabric can also be ordered separately, for $365 a yard (with a five-yard minimum), or requested as upholstery on another vintage piece. Information: (505) 872-1929 or lisafontanarosa.com.

Free Furniture With A Touchdown

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Posted by: Ashley Smith

Greensboro, NC — Buying new bedroom furniture or living room furniture is a pricey purchase, but what if you could get it for free?

Colfax Furniture, and the skill of a few athletes, may make it possible.

Any purchase made from now until 4 p.m. this Sunday is free, but only if the opening kickoff is returned with a touchdown in the big game this weekend.

The manager of Colfax furniture, Gary Woodham, says, “Whether it is for a $49 lamp or $10,000, $20,000 worth of furniture. Any purchase made between today and Sunday at 4pm, if the opening kickoff in the big game on Sunday in Tampa is returned for a touchdown, it’ll be free.”

The Colfax stores in Greensboro, Kernersville, and Winston-Salem are participating.

As far as refunds go, the same policies the store always uses apply.

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

By JULIE SCELFO

PURVEYORS of high-end furniture are far from the only home-related businesses facing hard times. On Monday, Expo Design Center, the Home Depot spinoff, became the latest among a host of well-known retailers and manufacturers to falter in the current economic downturn. And Wednesday, Condé Nast announced that Domino would join a growing list of home design magazines that have shut down recently, with the March issue its last.

Folding furniture: The kitchen island

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Posted by Brian Krepshaw

There is one nook (cranny?) in my kitchen that I’ve always thought about putting a small kitchen island. The additional work space would surely be welcomed. Problem is, the other things that live there would have to be moved, and I’m not entirely sure if I would actually like a kitchen island in that spot. So, I hesitate and the spot stays as is. I don’t want to make the commitment to a new piece of furniture that can only fit into one particular space; if it turns out I don’t like it, then I’m stuck with it.
